All About Beagle Dogs

Beagle dogs are hound dogs that are quite small for the type. These beagle dogs were originally bred to be avid hunters. In today's world, beagle dogs are often kept as loveable pets--not used for hunting. These beagle dogs are excited, friendly, and very social. They are also very good with children and enjoy playing. There are a variety of colors beagle dogs come in, such as black and white with brown markings, or even tan and white, or sometimes only black and tan. They usually stay very short--not exceeding 16 inches tall. Pricing on beagle dogs can be very low--sometimes even only about $50.00. You might find many of them free in classified ads because they can be a hyper handful in put in the wrong hands and many owners decide shortly after, that they don't have time for the hyper, happy little beagle dogs.

The American Kennel Club registers the beagle dogs development to a time back in the year 200 in Great Britian. They were bred, like as said before, to hunt, but mainly rabbits. The name "beagle" is unknown. Perhaps bea and gle came from somewhere or maybe Beagle was someone's last name. Some people believe that beagle dogs got their name from the French. "Gape throat" was said as "be'guele". This gape throat refers to what the beagle dogs do when the grab something they are hunting for.

Beagle dogs are quite friendly, especially with children, and they are gentle too. Since these dogs have hunting instincts it is best to get them familiar with other household pets at a young age. A beagle dog that hasn't lived with other animals for years, and suddenly becomes introduced to them may not respond well, and could have an instinct to fight. However, if put through training they will respond well and can be cured of their instinct. The most annoying thing about beagle dogs is their loud bark and whine. If you have your beagle outdoors, your neighbors may complain. If you plan on having a beagle outdoors, it is best to live in the country--not in a neighborhood. However, if you do live in a neighborhood it is best to keep your beagle dogs inside.

Beagle dogs as adults will eat two cups of food per day. They really enjoy eating, and they can overeat, so be aware of this. Adult beagles will growin into lazy little beings and will not require all the attention of the young beagle dogs. The adolescents need exercise everyday, and crate training or keeping a beagle caged is not a good idea. Training has the best effects if you begin early in the beagle dog's life. Treats are very effective with beagle dogs, because once again, they love to eat.

With age, as your beagle dogs get old, they do become suseptable to health problems, mainly with the heart, vision, and back. Dwarfism is also a common deformity in beagles. These dwarf beagles will have warped front legs like the basset hound and many times may be confused as being part basset part beagle. If your beagle dogs are kept healthy they can give up to 15 years or so, and the average litter size can be quite large--up to 14 puppies, although the common litter size is 7.

If you pay close attention to your new pets you can have a very happy, healthy bunch of beagle dogs.
